Screening for Men

Since July 2009 Trade has worked with Leicester sexual health services to provide a full sexual health screening programme every week within Leicester’s gay saunas.

The aim of the service is to allow gay & bisexual men access to all the screening expected from a local NHS sexual health clinic. Men can choose to give a urine sample and swab tests from the throat and rectum to test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea. We also offer blood testing for syphilis, HIV, Hep B and a full Hep B vaccination programme.

One of the first men who used one of Trade’s sauna clinics said:

"I would like to say a big thank you to the guys from Trade. You guys are doing a great service and I wish you all the best. If any guys want some confidential advice or check up, then these guys are not to be missed."

The openly gay male nurse is available to provide the tests/vaccinations whilst a Trade member of staff is on hand for men to talk to about safer sex, information on HIV, STIs, and Trade services.

The clinic is in a private room with men able to choose how they receive their results to ensure confidentiality. All information is kept strictly confidential, and men can return to the sauna for their results the following week if they wish.

The weekly clinics are open to gay & bisexual men and other men who have sex with men. No appointment is needed, just turn up and speak to the Trade worker on site.

Hepatitis B Vaccination Programme

If you have not yet been vaccinated against Hepatitis B, we can offer you the vaccinations for free at the sauna clinics. 

You might be given a blood test before you’re vaccinated which shows if you've already had hepatitis B. If you have you’re now immune, can’t get it again and don't need the vaccine.

The vaccinations are given as two or three injections over four weeks. You only get the full protection if you have had all three of the injections. A blood test 8 weeks after the last injection will show if the vaccine has worked. After 5 years you may need another booster injection.

In order to receive the vaccination, we need to know in advance which sauna clinic session you want to attend in order to start the vaccination programme. Vaccinations are not available if you just turn up on the day without having notified us that you're attending for a vaccination.

To further support the sauna clinics, Splash Spa & Leisure and Amigos Leisure give free entry to those men who only wish to visit the clinic and not use the other sauna services.
